Just imagine it: You’re on a coast-to-coast flight when,
suddenly, you hear it. You hear the music playing.

No. No. No. This can’t be right. You did not ask for these
sounds. Is this music playing out loud? You are stuck on this
flight — there is no actionable exit option available. WHAT DO
YOU DO?

For passengers on a Spirit Airlines flight on Wednesday, the
choice apparently was: brawl.

Five women traveling on a plane from Baltimore to Los Angeles
got into a physical fight that began after one woman played
music out loud on a boombox, LAX Police spokesman Rob Pedregon
told The Washington Post. No one was arrested.

Pedregon described the altercation as a “mutual combat
situation,” which is also how I describe an intense round of
“Settlers of Catan.” But I digress.

Cellphone video captured on the plane and published by KTLA in
Los Angeles shows a woman slapping and pulling another woman’s
hair:

The Los Angeles Times reported that two women were intoxicated
when one began playing the music. Spirit Airlines spokesman Paul
Berry told the newspaper that the after passengers complained,
the two women responded, “What are you going to do?”

“Then to provoke the other customers they were holding up their
boom box in the air, waving it around,” Berry told the newspaper.

The exchange devolved from an argument over whether “they had
the right to blast their music” into a physical fight, Pedregon
said.

“It’s just one of those things,” the police spokesman said.
“People in the air, stuck in a small confined space for a number
of hours.”

LAX Police were notified and met the plane when it landed
Wednesday morning, but investigators found “no cause for any
arrest,” Pedregon said. “If it had been something where there
were verifiable or visible injuries or a dominant aggressor,
then someone would have been arrested.”

The FBI also investigated, Pedregon said. An FBI spokeswoman
told the L.A. Times no one was charged.

“It isn’t uncommon,” Pedregon said of the fight. “People lose
their tempers and just refuse to get along.”

Spirit Airlines is the Greyhound of the sky. Any captain for a real
airline would have landed at the nearest suitable airport and had those
women removed. To continue on posed the threat of things really getting
out of hand. The captain used very poor judgment. Then again, being
the crappy airline it is, they might have fired him for using good
judgment that would cost the airline some money.
